FOOD FOR THOUGHT, THIS FRIDAY AT THE WOLFSONIAN-FIU LIBRARY
Join us this Friday evening for cocktails and an appetizing display and discussion of food and cocktail related ephemera from the Wolfsonian-FIU library collection as we celebrate our Modern Meals exhibition. Dr. Nicolae Harsanyi and I will be on hand to talk with food and design enthusiasts about some of the interesting materials in the library related to food production, distribution, and promotion.
We will begin with some advertising cards from the Kate Greenaway collection documenting food products and packaging from the Victorian era.
The librarians will also be laying out an abundant spread of illustrated catalogs, recipe books, vintage postcards, leaflets, and brochures produced by American growers and manufacturers for distribution at various nineteenth and twentieth century world’s fairs.
PROMISED GIFT OF MITCHELL WOLFSON, JR.
For our second course, we will have a look at some of the recipe books, food advertisements, display cards, and menus in our collection.

Thanks in large part to donations by Mitchell Wolfson, Jr., Laurence Miller, and Thomas C. Ragan, The Wolfsonian library possesses a fine and substantial collection of menus used on board the great passenger ships of the interwar and post-WWII period.

GIFT OF LAURENCE MILLER
Most of these had been originally collected for their beautiful cover illustrations. Some colleagues from the university’s Chaplin School of Hospitality and Tourism Management also showed interest in looking between the covers to see what was being served aboard the ocean liners.
GIFT OF THOMAS C. RAGAN
Finally, we will wrap up the night with a look at some materials published during the Second World War to promote the U.S. government’s rationing program.
