THE BRIEFEST OF BLOGS: HAPPY THANKSGIVING!

LIBRARY OBJECT OF THE WEEK

In honor of the Thanksgiving holiday, I thought I’d sign off this week with an illustration from Helen Johnson’s Farm Book, a children’s book of verses and block print designs. The book was written and illustrated by the author and published in Des Moines by the Iowa Craft Project. This project operated under the auspices of the Work Projects Administration–President Franklin Delano Roosevelt’s program designed to put millions of unemployed Americans back to work during the Great Depression.

While the Federal Arts Project received only a miniscule portion of the WPA budget, projects such as this one did keep writers and artists from starving. The project also resulted in the creation of beautifully illustrated children’s books like this one that helped to entertain and educate the nation’s youth in the 1930s and early 1940s. I thought that the illustration of the turkey in this book would be the best way to celebrate the holiday season.

  1. I love this page from Ms. Johnson’s WPA great book, Farm Book. Would you have a suggestion how I could obtain a copy of the book?
    Thanks very much,
    Barbara Bradley

It is a terrific book. Alas, it is also pretty rare. I was unable to locate a copy on ABEBOOKS.COM. I would suggest contacting Old Children’s Books, Aleph-bet Books, or other antiquarian booksellers specializing in children’s books. — The Chief
